SPIRIT OF MEDITATION

Mentoring and tuition

Meditation Guidance

Practicing meditation is like an analogy of being in nature. There are situations that are beautiful and feed your aspirations and there are those which can be harmful if you do not know how to deal with them. The initiative and responsibility for yourself andyour meditaiton is clearly your own. However communication with a guide who knows the terrain can help you find clarity about how to deal with the ever-changing situations you find yourself in. This is a combination of mentoring, coaching and training. A Guide uses all three of these approaches to help you keep your own initiative and ability to be creative.

A brief look at the meanings of Mentor, Coach and Trainer

Nowadays the terms mentoring, training and coaching have particular and separate meanings. Sometimes this difference is held to in a very hard and fast way. Below is my take on them. What I do is a combination of all three.

Mentoring.

Very generally a mentor has more experience in a particular topic than the person who is being mentored. It is on the basis of this experience that the mentor asks questions and may make suggestions and give a sense of direction. Advice is given on a provisional and practical basis, as in – perhaps this will be helpful…..,does it seem like something that you could use? The mentor asks questions but can also give practical and specific guidance and advice

Coaching

Within the strict definition of what is now known as coaching, no advice as such is given. It is not directive. It is all about the coach asking questions and on that basis the person being coached explores their own resources and abilities. In this way you find out the answers and solutions for yourselves. The questions and the way that the questions are asked by the coach point you in the direction of finding appropriate solutions for yourself in your own particular situation. The underlying view is that everybody has the resources to discover for themselves the answers and direction that they need. The coaches particular skills are in listening and developing a rapport that allows them to ask the right questions. The questions point people in the direction they themselves want and need to go in.

Trainer
Having a trainer is similar to having private tuition on a particular topic like meditation methods and associated subjects.

I combine all of these and call it Meditation Guidance
